REVISED STATE CHARTER PROGRAM RULES STILL LEGALLY FLAWED

For the second time this year, ELC has submitted written comments on amendments to the State's charter school regulations proposed by the NJDOE. ELC's comments challenge NJDOE's attempt to expand the charter school program without legislative authorization.

ELC has now expanded the user-friendly, interactive data available on its website that provides information on the demographics of NJ’s public school students. The new data allows users to examine the demographics of charter school students and compare charters and host districts.

ELC URGES NY COMMISSION TO CHAMPION THE RIGHT TO FAIR SCHOOL FUNDING

In testimony before the New York Education Reform Commission, ELC urged that the Commission recommend restoration of billions in state foundation aid cut from New York schools since 2010, in order to ensure all New York schoolchildren have the resources needed for a constitutional “sound basic education.”
FEDERAL COURT OF APPEALS RULING PROTECTS RIGHTS OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

In a recent, groundbreaking decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit upheld the rights of students with disabilities to a free and appropriate public education, reversing a NJ District Court dismissal of a lawsuit seeking to obtain compensatory education.

TASK FORCE ON DEREGULATION WOULD END KEY STUDENT SAFEGUARDS

An “Education Transformation” Task Force established by Governor Christie is proposing the NJDOE eliminate many critical safeguards put in place to ensure New Jersey public school children receive a high quality, “thorough and efficient” education, as guaranteed by the State Constitution and numerous statutes.
