ABBOTT CHIEF REFUSES PARENTS' REQUEST TO ENFORCE PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT REQUIREMENTS

Parent leaders from Camden, Newark, and Jersey City were disappointed at the refusal of Gordon MacInnes, the State's top official for urban school reform, to take action to enforce compliance with state and federal laws requiring parental involvement in the urban or "Abbott" districts.

The NJ Department of Education refuses to make public a 2003 study of the cost of providing a thorough and efficient education to all New Jersey public school students, prompting ELC to file suit yesterday to obtain its release before planned discussion on school funding begins in the Legislature in August.

The FY2007 State Budget Act, adopted by the Legislature and signed by Governor Corzine on July 8th, again permits the Education Commissioner to write the Abbott regulations for 2006-07 behind closed doors, and then adopt the rules without any accountability to urban education stakeholders, citizens and taxpayers.
