The
Student Rights Project (SRP) provides free legal representation
to school children who are denied access to an appropriate public
education. The cases accepted by SRP involve special
education for children with disabilities; school
discipline; school
district admissions/residency; alternative
education; and other violations of individual student
rights.
SRP targets cases involving low-income
students in high poverty school districts. Because SRP has limited
resources, it selects cases that raise systemic problems. SRP also
advocates for policy reform and provides community and legal education
through seminars and publications.
SRP receives funding from New
Jersey's Interest on Lawyers' Trust Accounts (IOLTA) program
to provide legal services to low-income New Jersey students
in education cases, and from New Jersey Protection and Advocacy,
Inc. to provide legal services to students with disabilities
residing in New Jersey's eleven northern counties.
