"Abbott v. Burke, the most important equal education ruling since Brown v. Board of Education." New York Times, April 30, 2002

March 2, 2004

Dear Corporate Counsel,

As a fellow corporate counsel and board member of the Education Law Center (ELC), I am writing to ask for your support of ELC, a non-profit organization that advocates on behalf of New Jersey's public school children for access to an equal and adequate education under state and federal laws. ELC works to improve educational opportunities for low-income students and students with disabilities through public education, policy initiatives, research, communications and, when necessary, legal action.

ELC has an outstanding record of accomplishment for New Jersey's public school children. As a result of ELC's representation of the 350,000 disadvantaged children in the Abbott v. Burke litigation, the New Jersey Supreme Court has ordered a comprehensive set of programs and reforms that provide a legal framework for disadvantaged students unrivaled anywhere in the country. These reforms include: $8.6 billion in school construction statewide; high quality preschool programs for over 40,000 children in 30 districts; extraordinary improvements in health and safety aspects of Abbott school buildings; small classes; after school programs; and upgrades in instruction and curriculum.

In this 50th anniversary year of Brown v. Board of Education, I hope that you will support ELC by making a donation to the organization's annual fundraising event, "Kids in Concert." The concert showcases the extraordinary talents of our urban public school children. It will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at 7:30pm at the State Theatre New Brunswick. I invite you to attend this moving event.

All donors are recognized with an advertisement in the "Kids in Concert" program and on ELC's website. To make a contribution, please click on the "Journal Advertising Form" link on the above left hand side of this letter. There, you will also find a link to ELC's website if you want more information.

Your support for "Kids in Concert" will help ELC sustain its efforts to assure that the Abbott programs and reforms proceed so that New Jersey's children receive an education that prepares them for success in the classroom, workplace, and in the community.

Sincerely,

John Page
Avaya Corporate Counsel
