Education
Law Center (ELC) seeks law student interns for Summer 2006
to assist staff in litigation that has resulted in the most
significant statewide school finance reforms in the nation
and that continues to break ground in areas such as preschool
education, whole school reform and special education.
ELC
is a not-for-profit public interest law firm founded in 1973,
which is dedicated to achieving access to high quality education
programs for disadvantaged children in New Jersey. ELC's staff
includes four attorneys with extensive experience in public
interest and education law, six other professionals with expertise
in education policy, research and community relations, and
support staff.
ELC
is composed of two complementary units: the Abbott Schools
Initiative (ASI) and the Student Rights Project (SRP). ASI
advocates on behalf of a plaintiff class of over 350,000 preschool
and school-age students who attend schools in 31 poor urban
districts to implement the landmark rulings in Abbott
v. Burke. SRP provides legal representation to
students who have been denied access to an appropriate education.
SRP cases typically involve systemic problems related to the
education of children with disabilities, student discipline
and school residency. ELC staff members also engage in public
education, legislative advocacy, policy initiatives and research.
ELC
cannot provide funding to its summer law students, but will
assist students in obtaining their own funding. Applicants
should send, by no later than March 1, 2006, a cover
letter briefly describing the student's interest in working
at ELC, a resume, unofficial transcript and a legal writing
sample to:
Theresa
Luhm
Assistant Managing Director

Students
who have finished their second year of law school are preferred.
ELC
is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer and encourages
students with disabilities, students of color, women and GLBTI
students to apply.
