Abbott Secondary Education Initiative

The NJ Department of Education has launched a Secondary Education Initiative (SEI), an ambitious program of middle and high school reform to improve student achievement and graduation rates in Abbott districts.

The SEI grew out of the Abbott X decision which ordered the formation of a workgroup of teachers, parents and educators to design a program of secondary reform. The SEI is based upon recommendations from that workgroup and is now part of the Abbott secondary regulations.

The initiative requires that by Fall, 2008, all Abbott students in grades 6-12 have:

  • Personalized, small learning environments
  • A family advocate system
  • Improved instruction for college and careers

The secondary initiative has the potential to address the urgent need for reform in our urban middle and high schools. But to make it a reality will take informed and active participation by educators, communities and families. To support this effort, Education Law Center has initiated a Secondary Reform Project led by Stan Karp, a veteran Paterson high school teacher and a member of the NJ DOE's Secondary Advisory Group (For more information contact skarp@edlawcenter.org or 973-624-1815, Ext. 42)
